[TTO – 99/4/21] The installation of the AZ shiftknob and boot on a early model car went flawlessly. Brent and I just put his on. It is a direct swap and looks awesome.
Only one drawback though. The AZ car is obviously a 6-speed, so it has the corresponding shift-pattern emblem on the boot bezel. Upon closer inspection, attempted removal to install the five speed emblem could be detrimental, as it has a clip and a spot of glue securing it.
With a little backyard engineering and a bit of luck, you probably could remove it but Brent and I didn’t want to chance it. Otherwise, it is a great addition to an otherwise beautiful car. The price on the knob and boot is $210.00

[NM – 2000/1/22] Your roving NSX cheapskate reporter here to tell you about a really cool mod that looks great and is guaranteed to reduce your lap times. All for about $50!
I’m talkin’ about my favorite Christmas gift under the tree this year – a brushed AL Dali Racing shift knob. My brother-in-law got me this little gift after a huge hint from my wife. Installation is a snap (once you figure out you have to pull down on the boot to release the old shift knob). The old one screws off, the new one screws on, and you are done.
The new knob is machined from AL and was beautifully done with little pitting or rough spots. I know RM Racing sells a similar unit and I am sure it is also an excellent unit – knowing Randy.
The threads matched perfectly with the previous knob and screwed securely in. The height is maybe a little taller then the old, but the feel and weight make shifting oh so much more enjoyable. It’s hard to believe the added confidence I now have with this new knob. No wonder Honda choose an almost identical knob for the new S2000 / Z-NSX. Shift that were made almost timidly are now with total confidence.
The only downside is the boot collar does not "attach" to the knob and becomes off center during shifting. This is a minor aesthetic type problem and I am going to try to "glue" it to the bottom of the shift knob to keep it together. What are other’s doing?
Anyway – very cool mod for very little $$$. These are the types of mods that get you into the mod heroin addiction – so be warned. You might as well order the Group M Supercharger while you are there. 🙂

[CWI – 99/11/15] I’d suggest taking a look at Randy’s product. He has engineered a solution that looks VERY stock. You won’t get the same stock look if you buy an aftermarket knob such as MOMO because the mounting rings on the NSX are specific to it’s gear shift.
I have the brushed titanium, looks sharp! Just ask Randy for his specific installation instructions. I screwed up mine the first time and had to buy a new mounting ring.
Attaching OEM Shift Boot To Aftermarket Knobs
[AV] Here’s what you do with the boot. You’ll need a small plastic tie wrap and wire cutters.
First, you’ll have to remove the center compartment, that little compartment between the seats which has a flip open door. There is a "fake" bottom inside which you remove with a thin bladed screwdriver and will reveal 4 screws.
After taking out the center compartment, remove the single screw that holds the back part of the center console. Remove the ash tray and you will find a couple of screws inside as well. Remove those screws.
Now, you will be able to lift up the center piece of the center console quite a bit from the rear end. You will now have to fold the shift boot into itself, so that the shiny plastic piece is inside the shift boot near the top part. Lift up the center plastic piece of the center console and support it at the rear end somewhere with something about 2-3 inches tall. You should now be able to slip your hand underneath and reach for the plastic piece that you folded into the shift boot.
Take the plastic tie wrap and tie it around the shift boot inside, at a point just above the plastic piece. Adjust the boot so that it fits near the base of the shift knob and then tighten the tie wrap and cut off the excess with the wire cutters.
Reassemble all parts and you are done.
